Although this may come as common knowledge to some, not everyone knows what makes a good sleeping environment for their baby. Many sleep issues such as early rising and frequent night waking at odd times can be explained by a not so ideal room environment. Here are my top 3 tips on creating a cozy inviting room for baby to sleep.

#1 Black out curtains: These are essential because when light comes through the window baby can take this as a sign that it is time to wake up. Also light exposure has a significant effect on babies sleep at night it plays a role in helping them sort day from night. Ideally you will expose baby to lots of light during the day and keep designated sleep time extra dark.

#2 White Noise Machine: in the beginning weeks this helps create a “womb” environment. Since there was constant noise in the womb, naturally it is much earlier for them to get comfortable and sleep better with the noise in their room. It is suggested to have it as loud as a shower. Once babe is past infancy the noise machine is used to drown out other sounds from outside or in nearby rooms. Also many see it as a sleep cue.

#3 Room Temperature: As we all know it is hard to fall asleep in a room that is too hot or too cold. This can have a significant effect on how baby falls asleep and stays asleep.  When we fall asleep our body cools down when the room is too hot it makes it difficult and essentially hurts our ability to fall asleep. Keep baby’s room between 66-72 degrees.
